The Buffalo Soundpainting Ensemble (BSPE) (501)(c)(3) is a cooperative ensemble of actors, musicians and visual artists dedicated to live composition, improvisational narrative, live experimental media, and the expansion of the possibilities of improvisational performance.

The BSPE has performed at, and been curated by, among other venues, Big Orbit Gallery’s Soundlab (The Foundation of Thebes), the Burchfield-Penney Art Gallery (Beyond/In Western NY), Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center (The Tell-Tale Heart), Irish Classical Theatre (Sirens, ULYSSES), Nietzsche’s, Buffalo Central Terminal, Silo City, and in partnership with the Buffalo Chamber Players.

Soundpainting is a pioneering live composition technique created by Walter Thompson, recognized as the universal live composing sign language for the performing and visual arts. This distinctive system utilises a specific set of physical gestures to guide performers, whether in expansive, multidisciplinary ensembles, in more focused, single-discipline settings, and all points in between.
